We comply with the GDPR and Norwegian data protection laws.

2. Data We Collect

We collect the following personal data:

Account Information

  • Email address
  • Name
  • Username and display name
  • Profile photo
  • Optional bio and location text you add to your profile

User Content

  • Reviews, ratings, and notes about restaurants
  • Photos and videos
  • Music attached to posts
  • Comments, likes, follows, and tags of other users
  • Restaurant lists, favorites, and saved places

Location Data

  • If you grant permission, we use your device’s location (while the app is in use) to suggest nearby restaurants and to show your position on the map. You can decline or revoke this permission in your device settings.

Subscription & Purchase Data

  • When you buy Barcoa Pro, Apple, Google, and RevenueCat process your purchase and share your subscription status with us. We do not receive or store your full payment card details.

Technical & Usage Data

  • Push notification tokens, device type, platform, and app version
  • Basic device, usage, and analytics data (see Sections 5 and 6) used for app functionality, product improvement, and security

3. How We Use Data

We use your data to:

  • Provide and operate the app
  • Display your content to other users
  • Suggest nearby restaurants and people to follow
  • Send notifications you have enabled
  • Provide and manage your Barcoa Pro subscription
  • Understand usage and improve the app (analytics)
  • Maintain security and prevent abuse
  • Show advertisements to users on the free plan
  • Comply with legal obligations

4. Legal Basis (GDPR)

We process data based on:

  • Consent
  • Contractual necessity (providing the service)
  • Legitimate interests (security, moderation)
  • Legal obligations

5. Advertising & Tracking

Barcoa uses Google AdMob to show ads to users on the free plan. AdMob may collect device identifiers to serve ads in accordance with Google’s policies and applicable laws. Barcoa Pro subscribers do not see ads.

On iOS, we ask for your permission before allowing tracking via Apple’s App Tracking Transparency framework. You can change this choice at any time in your device settings, and you can also limit ad personalization in your device’s privacy settings.

6. Analytics

We use PostHog (hosted in the EU) to understand how the app is used and to improve it. This includes events such as searches, reviews created, and screens viewed, along with an identifier and, for signed-in users, your email, name, and username.

We do not use analytics to build advertising profiles about you.

7. Data Sharing & Service Providers

We share data only with the service providers needed to operate Barcoa, including:

  • Supabase — backend, database, and authentication
  • Cloudflare R2 — storage and delivery of photos and videos
  • Apple, Google, and RevenueCat — processing and managing Barcoa Pro subscriptions
  • PostHog (EU) — product analytics
  • Google AdMob — advertising (free plan only)
  • Google Maps — maps and location display
  • Expo — delivery of push notifications and app services
  • Geoapify — address search and geocoding; Typesense (self-hosted) — restaurant search
  • Audius and Giphy — music and GIF search for Pro features, used only when you access those features

Sign-in providers you choose (Apple or Google) also process data to authenticate you. We do not sell personal data.

8. Data Storage & Transfers

  • Data is stored using trusted infrastructure providers.
  • Some data may be processed outside Norway/EU under GDPR-compliant safeguards.

9. Data Retention

  • Data is kept as long as your account is active.
  • When you delete your account, personal data is deleted or anonymized unless legally required to retain it.

10. Your Rights

You have the right to:

  • Access your data
  • Correct inaccurate data
  • Delete your data
  • Restrict or object to processing
  • Withdraw consent
  • File a complaint with a data protection authority

11. Children

Barcoa is not intended for users under 13 years old.

We do not knowingly collect data from children under this age.

12. Changes

We may update this Privacy Policy. Material changes will be communicated in the app.
